ABOUT

The Trip

Tour d'Afrique is a four month cycle expedition run by the Canadian company TDA Global Cycling.  Hitting the road in Cairo, the trip passes through ten countries before arriving in Cape Town.

Egypt - Sudan - Ethiopia - Kenya - Tanzania - Malawi

11370km    89 riding days     28 rest days     128km/day average

Zambia - Botswana - Namibia - South Africa

While a supported expedition, cyclists are largely self sufficient within the structure.  Participants take their own bicycle, shelter, repairs and spares, medical supplies etc. Luggage is carried by 4x4 trucks between camps, and a mechanic, medic and chef accompany the tour.  The route is outlined each evening and cyclists set off the next day at a time they feel suitable for their ability and desires.

About Me

Hi, my name is Emma.  I am spending the first four months of 2018 attempting to cycle the length of Africa.  Many people cycle a country - Lands End to John O'Groat's, Cape Reinga to Bluff; I have forgone this step and will start by traversing a continent.

This trip has been in the pipeline for about five years, and apparently the time is now.  The notion for such an escapade was born initially out of escapism during final year exams, and the need for an alternative career plan when exam prep suggested the basket containing all my eggs was an imminent liability.  Five years on, finals completed and degree validated through 4 years in the work place, I have now chosen to pursue the expedition, no longer as escapism, but as an aspiration to be fulfilled.

Join me and my two wheeled companion as we undertake 120 days of physical, mental and emotional adventure.
